WAILUA — Kaua‘i’s Taylor Viquelia shot an even-par 73 to finish tied for third place after the first round of the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Girls Golf Championship Tuesday at Wailua Golf Course.
Viquelia trails ‘Iolani’s Rose Huang (71) by two strokes and is only one-shot back of Baldwin’s Marissa Uradomo (72).
Viquelia used a strong back-nine to move up in the competition. After shooting a one-over 38 over the first nine holes and bogeying the par 5 hole No. 1 — she began her round on hole No. 10 — Viquelia birdied two of her final three holes to finish even on the day.
Kapa‘a’s Naea Oda finished two-strokes behind Viquelia with a two-over 75. Oda tied for eight place and is four strokes off the lead. After paring her first eight holes, Oda double bogeyed hole No. 9 to finish two-over on the front-nine. Oda responded with a birdie on hole No. 10 but mixed in two bogeys and another birdie for an even back-nine 37.
Two-strokes behind Oda and six off the lead was Kaua‘i’s Daesza Tomas with a four-over 77 that left her tied for 15th place.
Kaua‘i’s Jenae Park finished with a first round 103 while fellow Red Raider Sabrina Barriers cared a 114.
The Red Raiders head into the today’s final round of competition in fifth place over all. The Kaua‘i girls shot a combined 253, which puts them 32 strokes behind the Round 1 leading ‘Iolani Raiders. ‘Iolani’s four golfers combined for a team score of two-over par and leads Baldwin by eight strokes.
