LIHU‘E — Muscle and brawn packed into the Kaua‘i Veterans center for the Power Plus Bench Press Championships on Saturday.
With athletes competing in nine different weight classes, 35-year-old Kaipo Perry walked away with the overall title of Kaua‘i’s top bencher.
Perry, who weighs in at 265 pounds, lifted 495 pounds to take the 275-pound weight category title. Perry’s lift edged Jesse Quinata’s lift of 405 for the top-ranking in the weight class.
Kevin Agena impressed the crowd by benching double his body weight. At 148 pounds, Agena lifted 305 pounds to easily win the 148 pound category.
Bryson Andaya’s 455 pound lift won the Show Open category. Roy Simao’s 385 pound lift in the 165 pound group won him a title. In the 198 Pound category, Matt Atmosperea edged out Cannaan Bernard by 10 pounds with a 335 pound bench.
Gary Matta won the 220 pound category with a 405 pound lift while Nick Reyes matched that total for a win in the 242 pound division.
In the 275 pound novice division, Brycen Nakashima edged Jordan Kanahele by 15 pounds with a 365 pound lift.
