John Burger, an environmental coordinator at the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Mana, will speak on “Environmental Conservation at PMRF: Managing and Protecting Resources” at a free lecture at the Hanapepe Public Library at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Burger’s presentation will address the past four years of experience with adaptive management techniques to reduce the fallout of nocturnal fledgling migratory seabirds through lighting and fixture changes. The second part of his presentation will feature a slide show focused on the environmental and cultural aspects of Barking Sands.
Burger has been at PMRF for 10 years in environmental and cultural management positions. He is currently the Hawai‘i Range Complex sustainment support environmental coordinator.
He was responsible for the Commander Naval Operations (CNO) award for Cultural Resources Management/Small Installation and received the CNO Natural Resources/Individual Award.
PMRF this year received CNO awards for both natural resources conservation at a small installation, and also the natural resources team award.
Burger’s talk is part of the monthly Hawaiian Marine Environment lecture series sponsored by the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library on the first Thursday of each month. Each lecture is free and open to the public. Call 335-8418 for more information.
