LIHU‘E — Casey Quel, a 16-year veteran of the news industry, has been appointed publisher of The Garden Island — the newspaper’s top post.
Quel, the newspaper’s former advertising director, begins her duties effective immediately, Brian Kroshus, group publisher for the newspaper’s parent company, Lee Enterprises, announced.
“Casey knows Kaua‘i very well, having been born and raised here, and represents the value system the community is known and admired for extremely well,” Kroshus said in a news release.
“She is passionate about her community she now will serve as publisher, and has been very involved in a number of key projects at The Garden Island during her tenure,” Kroshus said.
Quel’s career began in 1996, when she worked for Honolulu Publishing Co. as an advertising account executive for its visitor publication. She first joined The Garden Island in 2003 as a territory sales representative. In 2009, she became The Garden Island’s advertising director — a position she has held for the past three years.
Born and raised in Hanama‘ulu, she is a Kaua‘i High School graduate and earned a degree in international business with an emphasis in marketing at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.
Quel’s immediate family still resides on Kaua‘i. She attributes much of her success to the support of her mother and father, Clementine and Pat Quel. She and her fiancé have two children.
“I am honored to have been selected publisher of Kaua‘i’s community newspaper. It is a position of great responsibility to provide accurate and balanced news to the people of Kaua‘i,” Quel said.
“The Garden Island news organization is not in business to sell newspapers; it is in business to provide pertinent and meaningful information to our community. Kaua‘i is home to me,” she said. “It will be a privilege to serve my community and keep people informed.”
