Thanks to many
First of all, mahalo nui loa to Mr. Rice for his kind words in his letter to the editor printed on March 11.
County crews from the Department of Public Works were certainly out around the clock and around the island doing their utmost to keep roads clear and safe.
But it happens that the response to the two particular incidents referred to by Mr. Rice were actually led by the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation to address incidents along the state’s Kuhio Highway.
And in addition to the efforts of Public Works and State Highways crews, the Kaua‘i Police Department was out in force in the driving rain, the county’s communications team was operating around the clock to keep the public informed, County Department of Water crews responded to reports of water system problems, the County Civil Defense Agency coordinated with the State Civil Defense to facilitate overall operations, county wastewater crews responded to the sudden enormous inflow of stormwater runoff into the wastewater systems, the good folks from KIUC, the American Red Cross and the National Guard responded, and the mayor and his staff managed and kept an eye on the whole effort.
To the many folks whom I’m sure I’m omitting, thank you for your efforts, also. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to work alongside many dedicated folks on the Garden Island, and it was inspiring to see everyone rise to meet the challenges of the past week.

Disingenuous
In a recent letter, Dr. Judy Shabert would have us welcome Planned Parenthood of America (PPFA) back to Kaua‘i. In a textbook case of disinformation, we are told repeatedly that PPFA is all about women’s health. Nowhere is abortion mentioned.
By conservative estimate, approximately 37 percent of PPFA revenues are from abortion. In its 2008-2009 fiscal year report, PPFA clinics aborted 332,278 children, a number equal to the entire population of Cincinnati.
Since 1970, PPFA has aborted an estimated 5.3 million children, equivalent to the entire population of Colorado. According to PPFA’s own March 2011 Planned Parenthood Services fact sheet, 332,278 abortions were performed on some of PPFA’s 3 million clients in the year ending on June 30, 2009. This suggests that 11 percent of their clients had abortions that year, but of the “services” provided for pregnant women in 2009, 97 percent involved killing their children (or is it non-sentient “blobs of tissue?”) and only 2 percent involved prenatal care or adoption referral.
Offering indigent women routine Pap smears, STD testing and breast exams seems laudable until overwhelming evidence suggests the centrality of abortion to PPFA’s business plan.
Are we to foolishly believe that PPFA on Kaua‘i will not soon offer abortions when Lisa David, senior vice president of Health Services Support for PPFA, announced in December 2010 that all affiliates would begin offering abortion services within the next two years. Perhaps PPFA of Kaua‘i would kindly verify publicly that they have obtained a waiver from providing abortion services.
Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was a racist and proponent of eugenics through birth control to “assist the race toward the elimination of the unfit.” In her book, “The Pivot of Civilization,” she advocated coercion to prevent the “undeniably feeble-minded” from procreating. PPFA’s abortions are done disproportionately on minorities. For every 1,000 African-American births there are 1,489 aborted black babies in New York City.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more African-American babies have been killed by abortion since 1973 than the total number of African-American deaths from cancer, AIDS, violent crimes, accidents and heart disease combined. It is not a fluke that most Planned Parenthood clinics operate in urban minority communities, and it takes little research to discover the organization’s true historical purpose.
Slightly more Americans in 2012 identify themselves as Pro Life than Pro Choice. For many, respecting the sanctity of life is inviolable religious canon. Abortion is offered next-door on O‘ahu by Planned Parenthood and the University of Hawai‘i at Kapiolani. Medicaid and most private insurance plans cover the procedure and the flight.
Providing abortions on Kaua‘i is, therefore, purely about making it more convenient. Many taxpayers are paying for abortions, against their consciences, at four levels: their federal taxes are supporting PPFA (roughly $363 million per year); state taxes are paying the salaries, etc., for the Kapiolani Abortion Clinic from University of Hawai‘i funds; state Medicaid funds pay for abortion services, and insurance premiums are subsidizing other member’s abortions.
An article published this week documented a 99 percent positive correlation between Planned Parenthood’s government support and its abortions.
Future support of PPFA will only lead to more abortions. PPFA does not offer health care in the sense of an annual well woman exam. Instead, for every $1 million of taxpayer money, PPFA consistently delivers 949 abortions.
PPFA’s major business lines are abortion/emergency contraception, sexually transmitted diseases/HIV, and contraception distribution.
To deny the primacy of abortion to their bottom line and core mission is disingenuous.
