A night drag race will greet the 2012 Garden Isle Racing Association calendar on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana.
“Rain, rain, go away, all the racers want to play on the track at Kaua‘i Raceway Park,” said Kerrilyn Villa of the GIRA.
Several of the 2011 events on the calendar were affected by inclement weather, and GIRA officials are hoping the worst has passed.
Gates open at 11 a.m. with timed trials starting from 2 to 6 p.m., followed by a dinner break. Bracket racing competition starts at 7 p.m.
Admission to the season opener is $12 per person at the gate, with young people 12 years and under being admitted for free.
“Drivers, crew and family members of the Garden Island Racing community have been busy dragging their cars out of storage, dusting off car covers, tuning engines, and modifying and replacing engine parts in anticipation of the new race season,” Villa said. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed for good weather. The opening event will be filled with its own roaring thunder from cars clocking single-digits down the quarter mile.”
Anticipated showings include door slammers, blown fuel cars, dragsters, muscle cars, imports and Junior Dragsters driven by young drivers ages 8 through 17.
Following Saturday’s race, the next GIRA race will be on April 7.
