Kekaha fisherman Greg Holzman will share “More than Just Good Eats: Bottom Fish and Other Deep Dwellers” today as part of the Hanapepe Public Library’s free monthly lecture and film series on the Hawaiian Marine Environment.
The series is free and open to the public from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month.
Holzman, a seasoned bottom fisherman, had the opportunity in 2010 to be aboard the submarine Pisces V, operated by the University of Hawai‘i’s Hawai‘i Undersea Research Laboratory.
During an eight-hour dive from depths of 700 to 1,400 feet, Holzman was able to witness many deep-water creatures in their natural habitats, as well as bottom fish habitat rarely seen by most people who are not fishermen or oceanographers.
His presentation today will share those observations and his work to help spawn bottom fish in captivity.
Each person attending will receive posters of bottom fish of Hawai‘i.
The monthly lecture series is sponsored by the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library.
