LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i County Council on Wednesday approved a bill that extends for an additional six months a pilot program that allows Kaua‘i Community College students to use The Kaua‘i Bus at no cost.
Moments prior to the unanimous approval of Bill 2428, Council Vice Chair JoAnn Yukimura called the proposal “a wonderful example of students participating in a democracy.”
On Aug. 22, the administration implemented a pilot program in conjunction with KCC. The program allowed students to ride the bus for free as long as they used a student ID.
The program was supposed to last six months, but KCC students and staff lobbied the council for an extension of the the free rides until June 30.
“I think that it’s a great development,” Yukimura said. “It was wonderful to hear how the bus is serving students in their pursuit of education.”
The decision came in the midst of a free bus campaign that began Feb. 20 offering free rides to anyone until March 10 on The Kaua‘i Bus.
