HONOLULU — The Kapa‘a Warriors season came to an end Friday night following a 72-66 loss to Hanalani in the fifth-place semifinals of the Division II Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Championship.
The Warriors found themselves down early in the game but managed to chip away as the quarters went on. After the first they were down 10. At the half they were down by 4. Hanalani went on a run to extend the lead in the third, but a 23-9 run from the Warriors gave Kapa‘a a lead with just over a minute left in regulation.
A Kainoa Souza-Chaves three-pointer with 54 seconds left tied the game at 64-64 to send the game into overtime.
Souza-Chaves, who finished the game with 20 points, scored four points in the four-minute extra session. In addition to Souza-Chaves, the Warriors had no answer for Christian Peterson, who had 21 points and 17 rebounds for Hanalani.
The Warriors were paced by their own big men. Senior Kainoa Colipano scored 16 points while grabbing nine rebounds and Lance Miyashiro drained 13 points and added eight rebounds. Colipano added two blocks.
The loss finished the Warriors season, with the boys in green going 0-2 at the state tournament. On Thursday, the Warriors dropped a 77-66 decision to McKinley.
