HANAPEPE — Four fields and 16 girls softball teams from Hawai‘i’s high schools made for some exciting softball action as Waimea High School opened its annual softball invitational Thursday morning at the Hanapepe Stadium complex.
Michael Koerte, the tournament coordinator, said teams play double-headers, Thursday and Friday before moving into Single Elimination playoffs, Saturday.
“Thursday is pool play and following that, Friday teams cross brackets before the Saturday single elimination,” Koerte said. “Due to the lack of lights and the lu‘au Saturday night, the championship games, one for the tournament title and one for Division II, will be played at the same time starting at 3:30 p.m.”
Teams in the tournament include Pac Five, Kaiser, Waimea, and Kamehameha-Maui in the Blue Pool. Mililani, Maryknoll, Lahainaluna and Kalaheo high schools are in the Orange Pool while Iolani, Leilehua, Kapa‘a and Kamehameha-Big Island make up the Green Pool. Kaua‘i, Mid-Pacific Institute, Waialua and Moanalua high schools make up the Red Pool.
Fridays games start at 10 a.m. when Moanalua opens against Waialua on Field A. Kaiser battles with Kamehameha-Maui on Field B, Mililani takes on Lahainaluna on Field C and Kapa‘a opens against Iolani on Field D.
Host Waimea takes the field starting at 11:45 a.m. against Pac Five while Kaua‘i takes on Mid-Pacific on Field C, also starting at 11:45 a.m.
Saturday games start at 8:30 a.m. with the championship games starting at 3:30 p.m.
