PIPELINE — Kaua‘i native Jeff Hubbard won the International Bodyboarding Association Pipe Challenge for a fourth time by defeating 11-time Pipe Champion Mike Stewart in the final heat.
Hubbard posted a final heat score of 18.65, his two top waves scoring 9 and 9.65. That score gave Hubbard a narrow win over Stewart who finished with a 16.65. Rounding out the round was Dave Winchester with a 16.5 finish for third place and Sam Bennett, who garnered a 16.25.
Hubbard opened the heat with one of the biggest Air-Roll-Spins of the event, which awarded him the 9.0 from the judges. The 9.65 was given near the end of the heat when Hubbard exited a barrel at the backdoor with a roll.
The closeness of the final heat wasn’t surprising considering the credentials of those involved. The duo of Hubbard and Stewart has claimed 15 Pipeline titles and 11 Word Titles together.
