Good luck, Koloa
I think the CEO of Grove Farms to even think about evicting the people who have lived there all their life has to be a cold person.
Most are seniors with no money and no place to go.
Good luck Koloa.

In a recent letter, “The Truth Matters,” the author (Letters: Feb. 14) states that the many filibusters by Senate Republicans are the problem that’s led to our country’s horrible financial mess and for the decreased quality of life borne by so many of our fellow citizens.
Unfortunately for the author, truth does matter, but it has nothing to do with his false premise.
The problems in this wonderful country of ours are extremely complex. They include everything from declining moral values, individualism at the expense of the group, self absorption, and greed in all levels of society. The result?
Too many individuals programed to feel just fine about taking from society for their existence, rather than being determined to contribute to it. Whatever happened to “ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country”? It has progressively exited the world stage.
In his effort to become our President, Mr. Obama made numerous and very large “giveaway” promises to the majority of Americans. He did it simply to get elected at all costs. Well those who believed that the slick teleprompter presentations and Alfred Newman smile were genuine are paying for it now, along with the rest of us.
Contrary to the author’s statements, Obama controlled all three branches of government, including the Congress and Senate, for the first three years of his Presidency. That’s how he was able to implement his naive and ridiculous programs intended to stop the recession by throwing as much money as he could at the problem without realizing you can’t cure the ills of unemployment by bloating the government worker payrolls. Government invents nothing, creates nothing, and does not pump new money into the system.
Only small and large businesses can do that. Instead of feeding the very engines of real economic growth, his policies rechanneled the growth into the bureaucratic nightmare we call government, and those it employs. At the same time, his Obamacare and other ill-conceived programs of “social justice” punished businesses by creating so much uncertainty our very engines of growth froze. Obama’s legacy is definitely one of change, but in the wrong direction.
Change implemented with the short sighted goal of getting votes from the masses at the expense of our future.
Republicans, Mr. Thorp, are doing all they can to prevent any further deterioration of our economy at the hands of a neophyte who has no clue about business or how it works. We can’t blame him.
He has no experience in making money outside of the bureaucratic dole and he’s the most “on the job training” President we’ve had since Jimmy Carter. He had little personal money coming into the presidency, and he’s going to be rich for the rest of his life going out. Good for him. Bad for us. Catastrophic for our nation.
The author also states: “I care about people and life.” He states: “A capacity for deep compassion will be the only thing standing between humanity and barbarism. “Say yes to life.”
If one really cared about life, how could they spin snuffing out the life of little babies in their mother’s stomachs to “it’s OK”? You can’t.
Do you honestly feel one’s decision to engage in a temporary activity of personal pleasure takes precedence over the creation and preservation of the human life the act is intended to produce?
All of us should look in the mirror. Are we really “saying yes to life”? Shame on us.
Republicans are trying to save you from yourself, Mr. Thorp.

Extend smoking ban
The bill to ban smoking at bus stops within 20 feet of the loading zone is terrific. Please pass this posthaste, but it would be even better if the distance is increased to 100 feet.
My experience is waiting at the Kilauea gym bus stop one rainy day, but having to stand under a lightly foliaged tree out in the parking lot due to a another heavy-smoker bus patron occupying the bus stop. It was a most negative experience.
Freely breathing while awaiting incoming buses will advance ridership, I am positive.
