Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. proclaimed Monday as Norm Chow Day on Kaua‘i.
Chow, the new University of Hawai‘i head football coach, was on Kaua‘i to meet with Carvalho and several of his staff and cabinet to discuss leadership and Chow’s vision for the Hawai‘i program, Beth Tokioka, a spokesman for the mayor, said in a news release.
In the proclamation presented to Chow by Carvalho, the Garden Island officially welcomes Chow as the “new head coach of the venerable University of Hawai‘i Warrior Football program.”
Chow, a Honolulu native and Punahou School alumnus, played guard at the collegiate and professional levels before starting his 39-year coaching career at Waialua High and Intermediate School. He held coaching positions at Brigham Young University, the University of Utah, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, North Carolina State University and the National Football League’s Tennessee Titans.
In 2002, Chow was the recipient of the Broyles Award as the nation’s top collegiate assistant coach and was also named the 2002 NCAA Division I-A Offensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Monthly. He was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year in 1999 by the American Football Foundation.
Chow, known for his acumen for offense, is credited with developing quarterbacks such as Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.
“We join the scores of Hawai‘i residents who have followed Coach Chow’s illustrious career and join all Hawai‘i’s football fans in bidding him success in the classroom and on the field as he and his staff guide the University of Hawai‘i Warrior football team through this season,” Carvalho said in the proclamation.
“On behalf of the enthusiastic sports fans of Kaua‘i, we look forward to forging relationships between the University of Hawai‘i Warrior Football Program and the County of Kaua‘i Parks and Recreation Department in seeking opportunities to innovate our youth sports programs and helping grow the next generation of Hawai‘i’s athletes in the tradition of many who have come from Kaua‘i and succeeded on the collegiate and professional levels.”
He became the first Asian-American head coach of a major football program after being named head coach of the University of Hawai‘i program in December.
