HONOLULU — The Hawai‘i Democratic Party said a fraudulent solicitation attempt was reported on behalf of a candidate and is alerting residents to be aware and report similar attempts.
An anonymous caller reported to a local party headquarters about a Sunday evening call from a person falsely claiming to be associated with the Democratic Party of Hawai‘i. The caller was reportedly asking for political donations under false pretenses and sought donations over the phone in the name of the Daniel Akaka U.S. Senate campaign.
“The good news is that we haven’t had any other calls with complaints about this,” said Chuck Freedman, communications director for the Democratic Party of Hawai‘i.
Freedman cautioned against callers asking for checks to be made out in a special way, or pressuring for credit card information over the phone or Internet.
If a resident is concerned about a call, Freedman recommended calling campaign or party headquarters about an alleged candidate claiming to be running to make sure any money is going to the real candidate.
