WAIMEA — The Kapa‘a Warriors swept its series in Waimea on Saturday. The Junior Varsity started the action with a 39-27 win, followed by the varsity Warriors coming from behind to nail a 50-46 win at Clem Gomes Gym.
Lance Miyashiro got hot in the third quarter, netting eight of his game-total 14 points to lead Kapa‘a from a 20-18 half-time deficit, Miyashiro deadlocking the contest for the first time with 4:00 showing in the period.
Kapa‘a got off to a slow start, finishing the first quarter on an 8-4 deficit, with Mark Roslin and Kala Kauhane dropping field goals after half the period had waned.
But following the third period, when Kapa‘a outgunned Waimea 23-16, the Warriors applied the press and kept ahead of the Menehune, its largest lead being eight points.
Kaili Schumacher-Lagundino netted all eight of the Waimea first-quarter points, going on to add five points, including a three-ball in the second as Waimea kept ahead of Kapa‘a, trying to meter the game.
The measure was effective until the third quarter when the Warrior press took its toll and Schumacher-Lagundino was held to just six second-half points toward his game-total 19 points.
Guard Brandon Palacio netted 11 of his game-total 15 points in the second half with Travis Soares and Jae Delos Reyes being limited to just four points apiece, Soares netting his marks in the third period and Delos Reyes getting a bucket in the second and third period.
Willis Batol, the Warrior guard, netted 19 points to lead the victory, scoring 13 points in the second half and dropping a trey in the second period.
Miyashiro finished with 14 points followed by Makana Aki adding six points along with Kainoa Colipano. Daniel Reis and Roslin finished with four points apiece with Kevin Esteban, Kaauhane and Brison Nacapuy each adding pairs.
Denmark Aladin led the JV win for Kapa‘a, netting a game-high 17 points, four coming in the first quarter when the JV Warriors built an 8-4 lead and never looked back.
Marlon Cudiamat added 10 points, and Matt Cummings finished with four points.
Peterson Lahip and Jamin Fernandez set the pace for the JV Menehune, each netting nine points followed by Charlie Kahepu‘u adding five points.
Kapa‘a completes the first half of Round 2 Tuesday when it hosts Kaua‘i High School at Bernice Hundley Gym, the JV game tipping off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity starting about 20 minutes after the completion of the JV match.
Island School travels to Waimea for a JV exhibition match starting at 5:30 p.m., according to the current KIF schedule.
The schedule is subject to change depending on the outcome of tonight’s girls basketball playoffs.
