PUHI — Soup’s on for the Super Bowl this Sunday.
However, there will be some changes for this year’s “Souper Sunday” event at the Clayworks studio/gallery located at Kilohana Plantation complex in Puhi, said Clayworks’ Susan Pittman.
“Patrons won’t be able to choose their soup bowls ahead of time since we won’t have them available until the morning of Feb. 5,” Pittman said. “We’ve been pretty busy.”
The price for the specially-made ceramic glazed soup bowl filled with a special soup created by the culinary department of Gaylord’s restaurant is $28 per bowl. This is the 17th year Clayworks has hosted the event.
“One hundred percent is a donation which will benefit the Lihu‘e Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies program,” Pittman said. “The Mobile Munchies helps the Salvation Army, Nana’s House, the Boys & Girls Club on Kaua‘i, Hale Ho‘omalu, the women’s shelter in Kapa‘a and the Lihu‘e Town Court.”
Pittman said the Lihu‘e Lutheran Church provides the Salvation Army Kokua Soup Kitchen with a crew for the Thursday lunch, as well as the munchies diners take after the meal.
“They serve about 400 brown-bag Mobile Munchies each week,” she said.
She said bowls for the Souper Sunday event will be fired and glazed at the end of the month and should be ready for diners starting at 11 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday.
“Diners can call ahead to reserve a bowl, but will have to wait until Feb. 5 to select it,” Pittman said. “People can call 246-2529 to reserve their bowls.”
Diners can choose to stay and eat their soup in the lush seating area normally used by clay students, or take it home.
