The Friends of Hulali Kiyoko Rivera car wash fundraiser was handling three to four cars at a time Sunday, but the line remained long all day at the New Kapa‘a Town Park Pavilion.
It was a warm, sunny day, making it perfect car wash weather, but it was more about helping a Kaua‘i family offset travel and medical expenses for their 1-year-old girl undergoing treatment for brain and eye tumors in Los Angeles.
Anolani Higashi and Kelo Rivera say Hulali Kiyoko Rivera has had her right eye removed to treat bilateral retinoblastoma, an aggressive tumor of the retina. She will soon undergo additional laser treatments for smaller tumors in her left eye. Doctors have also diagnosed the girl with choroid plexus papilloma, and she is being treated for brain papilloma.
The girl and her mother have been staying at a nonprofit Ronald McDonald House in Los Angeles since November. Visit the Friends of Hulali Rivera Facebook page, email yukieds@yahoo.com or call 639-3739 for more information.
