The Noice brothers, Logan and Brodie, topped the overall finishers in the one-mile and two-mile courses on Saturday at the 29th annual Youth Fun Run at Kilohana Planation in Puhi.
The event was hosted by the YMCA of Kaua‘i, in conjunction with the East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club.
Tom Tannery, director of the YMCA, said about 100 young runners, and one dog, opened their Saturday morning with a rigorous run, or walk, through the picturesque plantation estate and onto the Kaua‘i Community College campus.
“There were more than 50 pre-registered for the event and with the walk-ins, there should be about 100,” Tannery said. “This is a great family event.”
Donna Schulze, a long-time run supporter, said there were three bicycles which would be distributed at the end of the run through a random drawing.
“Next year, this run will celebrate its 30th year, and when we got the bikes, I asked the guy if it means we will get 30 bicycles for next year,” Schulze said. “Today, my job is to post at one of the stations and cheer ‘Well done! You’re almost there!’”
Schulze, a staunch YMCA supporter, was accompanied to the run by her dog Patches who was the only canine in the event, this year being “escorted” by Sophia Ross.
Patches is 6 years old, and Saturday’s run marked the canine’s third straight year of participation. Each year, the canine is “escorted” through the one-mile course by a volunteer or a group of young runners who enjoy running with the dog.
Logan Noice lost little time asserting himself on the runner-friendly course, crossing the finish line in the one-mile course in a scant 6:52 from the start.
His brother Brodie set the pace for the two-mile run that extended through the KCC campus, stopping the clock at 13:20 as the first overall finisher for that course.
