In an overwhelming vote, Hawai‘i teachers voted against ratifying a contract that would have taken them through 2017. The ballot’s results were 67 percent against the contract, 33 percent for.
Under the proposed contract, teachers would continue to work under the current 5 percent pay cut, but be eligible for performance-based step raises after June 30, 2013.
While the Hawai‘i State Teachers Association’s leadership recommended ratifying the contract, many teachers were skeptical of it. The performance-based pay raises would have benefited teachers rated “effective” or “highly effective,” but many were skeptical because the methods and metrics for evaluating teachers’ performance were not specified.
