PUHI — “Hurry, hurry,” Kaua‘i Community College culinary arts instructor Steven Nakata quietly but firmly urged his students Tuesday. “We want to get these muffins into the oven before breakfast is over.”
The students worked among four teams, creating a variety of breakfast muffins during their class at the KCC culinary arts facility.
People will have an opportunity to watch these students in action at 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Feb. 19 at the 26th Annual American Culinary Federation Breakfast.
Students will be in the limelight, but they’re being joined by some of the finest chefs on the island to create breakfast for the public.
Students also will be recognized for their achievements in class through a variety of scholarships that will be presented during the event, which also will feature entertainment from KCC student groups, alumni and community entertainers. Also scheduled is a used book sale coordinated by the college’s Learning Resource Center.
Chef Martina Hildorfer, a culinary arts instructor, said advance tickets for the event, which is being billed as Kaua‘i’s biggest and best brunch, are now on sale for $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 through 10. Keiki under 5 are admitted free. Tickets will also be available at the door for $18 for adults and $5 for children.
Proceeds from the event go toward student scholarships and equipment needed by the culinary arts students at KCC, Hildorfer said.
Ticket outlets include Kalaheo Coffee, the Kaua‘i Coffee Visitor’s Center, the Koloa Fish Market, Fish Express in Lihu‘e, Pono Market in Kapa‘a, Mark’s Place and Contemporary Flavors Catering in Puhi and the KCC cafeteria.
Eggs Benedict, omelets cooked to order, carved roast beef, scrambled eggs, Portuguese sausage, ham, breakfast potatoes, rice, pancakes, a variety of fresh fruits and pastries are on the menu. Also on the menu will be Meadow Gold drinks, Kaua‘i Coffee and Kaua‘i Springs water.
Hildorfer said this event is a great opportunity to come wala‘au, or talk story, with friends and neighbors, enjoy island-style live entertainment and eat to your heart’s content with grinds from Kaua‘i’s future chefs.
