HANAPEPE — The Kaua‘i and Waimea varsity boys soccer teams face critical games Wednesday in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys soccer race.
Kaua‘i’s boys will be at Island School for a 4 p.m. showdown against the Voyagers, who suffered a 5-0 loss at the hands of the Kapa‘a Warriors currently leading the KIF varsity boys’ standings.
The Warriors, holding just a point lead over Waimea heading into last Saturday’s matches, will attempt to increase their point standings when the team faces Waimea, the Menehune and Raiders battling to a 1-1 deadlock Saturday.
Game time for the varsity boys will start no earlier than 6:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium. The Waimea and Kapa‘a varsity girls square off starting at 4:30 p.m.
The Kaua‘i High School varsity girls, with just one game remaining on its docket, has pretty much locked up the KIF title with its undefeated season behind the coaching of Reiko Yoshida, the Red Raider ladies taking a 4-0 win over Waimea last Saturday. The Kaua‘i girls play their final KIF season game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Kapa‘a. The varsity boys continue their season until Feb. 1.
Donna Palmer, the KIF officials coordinator and scorekeeper, was unable to get the scorers for the Kapa‘a win over Island School, but provided information on the JV games from Saturday.
Jacob Lewis lost little time getting the Kaua‘i JV boys noticed, scoring the first goal of its 6-0 win over Waimea Saturday, according to scoring information from Palmer.
Lewis broke the plane in the first minute of play, triggering the Menehune defense, who held the field scoreless until the 24th minute when Jared Okayama scored.
Kaiea Iwasaki, normally filling in the defender position with Okayama, reversed his role, scoring a goal in the 27th minute for the 3-0 half-time lead.
Kaua‘i roared back in the second half, its normal goalkeeper Alec King-Martin netting a goal in the 39th minute, or within five minutes of the second half.
With no time to recover, Marcus Brown found the net seconds later. Benjamin Smith scored the final goal in the 43rd minute in the game where midfielder Reggie McFadden was cautioned.
The Kaua‘i JV girls spread out its scoring in its 5-0 win over Waimea, with Tailee Tangonan, Mia Chan, Kiana Pagador, Caitlyn Cantorna and Sara Koide getting nets in the shutout.
Over at Island School, the Kapa‘a JV girls got goals from Kendra Vegas, Madisson Hinkel, Brooke Spencer and Ana Cunningham in a 4-0 win over the Voyagers in an exhibition match.
