PUHI — Yasmine Ware broke two Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation swim records and Anya Littlefield broke another Saturday when Kaua‘i High School hosted the third qualifying swim meet at the YMCA pool.
Ware, a freshman at Kaua‘i High School, set a new standard in the Girls 200-yard individual medley and broke a record she set Jan. 7 in the girls 100-yard backstroke.
Both events earned her an automatic qualifying time to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state swim meet.
Jumping off the blocks, Ware quickly established her command of the water, stopping the clock at 2:14.40 and besting the record set by Kate Machorek (2:17.66) in December 2011 by almost three seconds. Machorek, in setting the record, also earned a state qualifying time, besting the 2:19.59 auto time standard.
Ware’s second record came in the 100-yard backstroke, where she bested her seeded and KIF record time swim with a 1:00.42 over the record of 1:00.79 set Jan. 7 at the Kapa‘a pool. Both swims qualified her for state (1:04.09).
Ware finished the day posting a state swim in the girls 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:11.66, just shy of her seeded swim of 1:11.30, the record setting swim of Jan. 7.
Kapa‘a senior Anya Littlefield broke her KIF record in the 200 -yard freestyle event, stopping the clock at 1:59.97 to best her existing KIF record swim of 2:02.19 set in January 2011.
The swim earned her a state qualifying time (2:02.63), but beyond that, Littlefield became the first KIF female swimmer to post a sub-two minute swim in the event, said coach Billy Brown who works the scorers’ table.
Littlefield, who set the record in the girls 500-yard freestyle event in January, 2011, also earned a state swim in Saturday’s event, stopping the clock at 5:21.17.
Kapa‘a freshman Bryson Baligad pulled the men into the spotlight, triggering the Warrior Medley Relay to a consideration swim and pocketing two individual consideration swims.
Baligad led off the Warrior medley relay in the backstroke, and the team stopped the clock at 1:59.75 for the consideration.
Team members include Baligad, Kaz Tasic, Rico
Joel and Micah Nobriga-Ferris.
Baligad stopped the clock with a sub-one minute swim at 58.87 in the boys 100-yard butterfly for a consideration swim, falling short of the 57.28 auto standard.
He also touched the wall at 1:01.83 for a first finish in the boys 100 -yard backstroke for his second individual consideration swim.
The fourth KIF qualifying meet moves to the Waimea pool at 10 a.m. Saturday.
