LIHU‘E — A resident’s concern over possible liability issues at a bus stop in ‘Ele‘ele was acted on by the county’s Transportation Agency.
“For safety reasons, the bench at the bus stop was removed, Thursday,” county Executive on Transportation Celia Mahikoa said in a press release.
Mahikoa said the bench is not part of the bus stop located at Laulea Road and Kaumuali‘i Highway. The bus stop in ‘Ele‘ele, she said, is scheduled for shelter construction on completion of the design and engineering contract.
“Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. has made the sheltering of all bus stops on Kaua‘i a priority and has started with Americans with Disabilities Act improvements to 51 bus stops along the highway,” Mahikoa said.
“This includes two bus stops which have been fully converted to bus shelters.”
One of the completed bus shelter, located in front of the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center, was blessed, Wednesday afternoon, Carvalho recognizing the third grade students in the Kamehameha School’s Kali‘imamo Program who built a bench and donated it to the county for installation in the shelter.
The sheltering of all bus stops on Kaua‘i is part of Carvalho’s Holo Holo 2020 vision which calls for all organizations, businesses, residents and visitors on Kaua‘i to be part of creating an island which is sustainable, values the native culture, has a thriving and healthy economy, cares for all — keiki and kupuna — and has a responsible and user-friendly local government.
