Waimea High School picked up its first win of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation paddling season, Saturday at the Wailua River.
Following a third finish in last week’s regatta, the Menehune wahine soared to the top, edging the Kapa‘a girls by less than a second.
Kaua‘i High School, which topped the varsity girls race last week, fell to third place on a 4:09:81 paddle, although that time was faster than last week’s winning time of 4:13:61.
The Menehune wahine stroked across the line on a 4:04:60 hotly challenged by Kapa‘a’s wahine with a 4:04:90 run over the half-mile course.
With the win, Waimea pulled into a tie for the lead of the girls varsity division with seven points. Kaua‘i’s third finish earned a point for an overall seven points. Kapa‘a rounds out the division standing with six points, and Kawaikini has a point.
Kaua‘i High School’s varsity mixed squad continued to shake things up, on Saturday, being awarded top honors in the division with a 3:50:56 run over Kapa‘a (2:52:89) and Waimea (4:33:82), according to results released by the KIF.
With the win, the Kaua‘i mixed team, sporting a first and second over the past two regattas, soared to the lead with 10 points, challenged by Kapa‘a with eight points and Waimea with three points, overall.
Kapa‘a’s boys maintained their dominance in the varsity boys division, topping the field on a 3:40:07 run over Kaua‘i (3:42:47) and Waimea (3:52:71) for 12 points following three regattas. Kaua‘i and Waimea round out the field with six and three points, respectively.
This sets the stage for the Saturday regatta when the teams meet up at the Wailua River starting at 9 a.m. The leaders in the varsity girls and varsity mixed divisions are separated by just one and two points, respectively, with the standings likely to change depending on who is able to cross the line first.
First place earns teams four points, second place is two points and third place is a point.
Kaua‘i topped the junior varsity girls race, its fastest team crossing at 4:02:33, followed by Kapa‘a’s fastest team crossing at 4:26:82.
Kapa‘a went on to take the junior varsity boys and JV mixed divisions, the Warrior JV boys stopping the clock at 3:46:18, followed by Kaua‘i at 4:14:56.
Kapa‘a’s JV mixed team stopped the clock at 4:02:62 followed by Kaua‘i at 4:07:09.
