KAPAHI — A Kapa‘a man remains in police custody after allegedly firing multiple rounds from a rifle at his home Thursday night.
Kevin Christian, age 41, was arrested for first-degree reckless endangering after he surrendered to police at 12:06 a.m. Friday.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Kaua‘i Police Department’s dispatch office received reports of gunfire heard at a home in Kapahi, Kaua‘i’s Eastside.
Police officers, along with a SWAT team and crisis negotiators, responded to the gunfire, which turned out to be coming from a home on Kawaihau Road near Kapahi Park, according to KPD.
Upon their arrival, the suspect was located firing a rifle from his yard.
KPD closed Kawaihau Road at the intersection with Ka‘apuni Road, blocking area residents from going home. At least seven patrol cars were in the area, plus a large KPD truck and a smaller KPD pickup truck.
Several bystanders parked their cars near the blockade, unable to get to their homes. KPD officers told a few of them to back off and stay off the road.
Crisis negotiators were able to convince Christian to drop his weapon and surrender. No one else was at home and no injuries were reported, according to KPD.
Kawaihau Road was reopened at approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday after Christian was taken into custody.
Christian remains in the KPD cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.
