LIHU‘E — State Farm agent Darrellyn Lemke presented a $1,000 donation from the insurance agency to the Kaua‘i Fire Department to help purchase a fire safety trailer that will be used to educate local residents about fire safety.
As part of a $130,000 Fire Prevention & Safety Grant through the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Kaua‘i Fire Department must raise 20 percent in matching funds. The donation was presented to Kaua‘i County Council for approval at its meeting Wednesday.
The fire safety trailer will be presented at schools and community events to raise awareness of the importance of smoke detectors and reducing fire hazards in homes.
Families will be encouraged to create a home escape plan for every member to know exit routes and where to meet outside the home. Children will learn how to call 911 once they are outside, or alert a neighbor to call for help.
“It’s important for families to plan for emergencies. Children should be familiar with what a smoke detector alarm sounds like, and know what to do when they hear one go off,” Lemke said.
“Families should conduct periodic fire drills to avoid panic and confusion if a real fire strikes. The fire safety trailer will be a valuable tool,” Lemke said.
