HANAMA‘ULU — Kaua‘i’s first traffic fatality of 2012 was not in a vehicle. A 69-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a pickup truck in Hanama‘ulu Wednesday morning.
Nepumuceno Kabigting, of Hanama‘ulu, was crossing Kuhio Highway near the Laukona Street junction at about 5:45 a.m., when he was struck by a white Toyota pickup truck heading north, according to a press release from the Kaua‘i Police Department.
He was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the pickup, a 59-year-old male, was not injured, county spokeswoman Sarah Blane said.
The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk when he was struck, according to the KPD.
A portion of Kuhio Highway, between Laukona and Laulima streets, remained closed by KPD until 8:15 a.m., causing a traffic snarl for morning commuters.
