LIHU‘E — A 13-year-old youth was detained following a brush fire that scorched the hillside above Ninini “Running Waters” Beach on Monday.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department reported responding to the fire at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Course just below the gazebo and directly above Ninini beach.
The area is between Kalapaki beach and the Ninini Point lighthouse.
The fire department’s big engines, No. 3 and No. 5, as well as the smaller Truck No. 5 and Rescue No. 3 vehicles, were on the scene.
They were parked at opposite ends of the fire along the No. 6 fairway that is part of the Kiele Moana Nine stretch along the ocean coastline’s 27-hole golf course.
Approximately two acres of hillside brush was burned before the fire was extinguished by 2:30 p.m., according to the Kaua‘i Fire Department.
Firefighters said no injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.According to the Kaua‘i Police Department, a 13-year-old boy was detained in connection with the fire, but no charges had been filed.
A group of teenage body boarders reported watching two people setting off firecrackers in the area.
It did not appear that any of the buildings or property of the nearby Dye Villas Private Residence Club and Kaua‘i Marriott Resort were in any danger from the fire. The smoldering brush sent up thick smoke.
