LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i residents can recycle their Christmas trees at the island’s Hanalei, Hanapepe, Kapa‘a and Lihu‘e refuse transfer stations, and at the Kekaha Landfill.
“We’ve already had more than 10 come in from Christmas,” said Peter Brun, a Lihu‘e refuse transfer station staff member who worked the front loader to accept and move the trees to a more central collection area.
Christmas trees are accepted for recycling dail,y except on holidays, from 7:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the refuse transfer stations. Kekaha Landfill hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“We hope everyone will take the time to recycle their Christmas trees,” Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said in a county release.
“It requires little effort, yet the impact on our island is tremendous. If everyone recycles their trees, tons of green waste would be diverted from our landfill, and the compost generated from this can be used to fertilize other plants and trees.”
A drop-off point for trees is also located on the west end of the main entrance to Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping on Kaumuali‘i Highway in Puhi. This drop off site is available seven days a week.
Trees for recycling must be free of flocking, tinsel and ornaments when brought to the recycling locations.
