HONOLULU — Registration is currently being accepted by the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i 2012 Youth Basketball program which starts Jan. 9.
During the 12-week program which will be held in Kapa‘a, Lihu‘e and Waimea, youth will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball. The program offers two practices a week with Saturday games in February and March under quality coaching.
Players must have court shoes to participate. Participants also receive a program T-shirt.
Registration is $25 at the Lihu‘e and Waimea sites and $30 in Kapa‘a for any boy or girl who is a current Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i member.
For youth who are not members of the BGCH, there is an additional $1 fee, and prospective new members will need to complete a BGCH membership application and provide age verification.
Youth groups will be 7-9 years, 10-12 years and 13-16 years.
The program will focus on skills and drills, guided by the philosophy of teaching physical skills, having youth learn about the positive qualities of the sport, providing an opportunity for each participant to learn and to have fun.
BGCH staff will administer the program and are asking for volunteers to serve as team moms, coaches and game officials.
Each Boys & Girls Club site will host a parent and coaches meeting before the programs start so adults can be introduced to the program philosophy, BGCH staff and have coaches register for the program.
Coaches will be provided with coaching information and a basketball skills training manual produced by the LA84 Foundation, legacy of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
BGCH is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring Hawai‘i’s youth to become responsible citizens, operating 12 sites on O‘ahu and Kaua‘i where BGCH members are able to access a multitude of programs and services.
BGCH clubhouses, known as the place where “great futures start,” and outreach sites provide guidance-oriented character development programs five days a week for children 7 through 17 years old.
Key programs emphasize character and leadership development, education, technology and career development, health and life skills, the arts and sports, fitness and recreation.
