WAIMEA — A fire gutted a Waimea house Christmas Day, causing tens of thousand of dollars in damages. The house was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the fire.
“The home was destroyed and one man lived there,” said Maria Lutz, from the Hawai‘i Red Cross. “We helped him with food, clothing and household goods. He is staying with friends.”
Kaua‘i Fire Department Station 3 responded to an alarm Sunday at Menehune Road at around 7:57 p.m. The fire was reportedly under control around 8:10 p.m. and fully extinguished by 9:14 p.m., according to county officials.
No injuries were reported and no other structures were threatened by spreading flames.
Damages to the 900-square-foot, three-bedroom wooden home and its contents is estimated at $200,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
A Red Cross press release states that in the coming weeks caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed.
The Red Cross encourages families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different escape routes, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available to aid in a quick evacuation.
Information on developing a family plan is available at www.redcross.org, or a brochure can be requested by calling 734-2101.
