Lisa Trepanier, Roswitha Roese (a Rotarian involved with diabetes research), and Ruth Collier of Toronto, Canada, (visit www.thegardenisland.com for a photo) could not believe their eyes when Santa arrived in a double-hulled canoe Saturday at Kalapaki Beach.
But they were not alone as several hundred other people got excited, chasing down the canoe (No, Chris Kauwe wasn’t there; he is on the Mainland.) to its landing spot near the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club’s lu‘au grounds.
Jeff Haigh is back from Auburn, Calif., and was making his usual sand sculptures (he’s supposed to be working on a Monkees piece some time this week) and borrowed another Jeff, Jeff Peterson of Kalaheo, who was working on a castle nearby.
Ed Kawamura had three generations of family members at M. Kawamura Farm Enterprises, Friday evening when they started making the mallets to pound mochi. Kenny Ishii is a first-time mochi-maker, er mallet-maker, and Ed said it was nice that you don’t need to tell people to show up. They just come.
