LIHU‘E — Many things on the islands nowadays come from China, including The Garden Island’s new managing editor, Renée Haines. Haines joins TGI from her most recent post at China’s largest English-language newspaper, China Daily, in Beijing.
“Renée is a consummate professional with a diverse background,” said Randy Kozerski, editor and publisher of TGI. “We are delighted to have her join The Garden Island team. Her education, experience and passion will be a welcome addition to an already talented newsroom.”
Haines brings 20 years of news experience to TGI. Former positions include editor of daily and weekly U.S. newspapers, international news wire service bureau chief, reporter and radio station news director.
At China Daily, Haines spent two years hosting English-learning news audio and online video programs for the newspaper’s website. She also provided copy editing and newswriting coaching for both print and Web reporters.
She is a University of Texas graduate with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
“I began my career in community journalism, and it is a privilege to be able to return to my roots, especially at a local newspaper that practices the openness, balance and daily commitment to service that defines the best in this business,” Haines said.
“Community newspapers are no more immune to today’s challenging economy than the livelihoods of many of our readers. I believe local newspapers will remain a vital platform to share the good and bad news, and also the often thoughtful and sometimes extraordinary ideas of readers who are also neighbors,” she said. “It is an honor to help continue this tradition in service to my new neighbors on the beautiful island of Kaua‘i.”
Haines began working for TGI on Wednesday.
Former managing editor Nathan Eagle made the internal announcement of his resignation in mid November and left his post of the last two years in mid December. Eagle started with TGI in 2006 as a reporter covering the business and environment beat.
“We are sad to see Nathan Eagle leave, but he left a positive mark on the paper and in the community,” Kozerski said. “We wish him the absolute best in his next assignment.”
Eagle said he plans to explore the South American continent, starting with the southern tip of Chile, and work his way north. He said he may eventual return to Kaua‘i.
