Next time you have a craving for a burger, kalua sandwich or delectable local breakfast, you best be heading to Kalapaki to eat at The Feral Pig in The Harbor Mall.
The Lihu‘e restaurant opened its doors in August. While it’s location is home to a revolving door of restaurants (remember The Tiki Room and Market Street Diner?), The Feral Pig’s food should stand the test of time. It uses mostly local ingredients paired with homemade sauces and drinks to create both sweet and savory meals.
While the decor inside The Feral Pig may be lackluster, their menu filled with local ingredients and incredible customer service more than makes up for it.
The Lihu‘e restaurant uses the freshest ingredients possible, including local greens, Kaua‘i beef and fresh catch.
There are some savory dishes that will leave you loosening your belt, but what else do you expect from Hawai‘i’s favorite breakfast, the Loco Moco? The fluffy rice, fried egg, medium hamburger and rich, smooth gravy make this Kaua‘i breakfast staple one of the best on the island.
The restaurant’s pork sandwiches do not disappoint. The Feral Pig serves a Kaua‘i-Cubano ($10) with kalua pork, ham and Swiss cheese on a pressed roll. A homemade pickle and onion mustard completes the meal.
The sloppy Kalapaki ($9) is also a delicious bet. It includes house-smoked kalua pork, barbeque sauce, coleslaw and homemade pickles.
The Kaua‘i beef burger is a safe bet: 100 percent Kaua‘i beef topped with your favorite toppings, like bacon, cheese, mushrooms and onions. Burgers start at $9.
The award for most eclectic menu item goes to the Banh mi ($11). This Vietnamese dish features pork belly, pate, cilantro and pickled vegetables to create a lovely dish. With its commitment to fresh ingredients, fun menu and friendly customer service, The Feral Pig is a restaurant to keep an eye on. Now comes the real dilemma — do you want fries or a local green salad with that juicy burger?
The Feral Pig is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and is located at 3501 Rice St., Ste. 103 in Nawiliwili. Call 246-1100 for more information.
Best Bet: The Kaua‘i-Cubano sandwich ($10), which includes kalua pork, ham, homemade pickles and onion-mustard sauce topped on a roll. The sandwich includes fries or you can swap them out for a local green salad (for $3 more). Opt for ranch dressing to dip your thinly cut fries to complete the meal.
For Drinks: The Feral Pig’s homemade lemonade can’t be beat.
On a Budget: Clam chowder ($5). Have a cup of this steamy, creamy soup for a light lunch that is light on your wallet.
