LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Police Department recently recognized three officers for outstanding service: Lt. Richard Rosa, officer Anthony Abalos and officer Colin Nesbitt.
At a Police Commission meeting Friday, KPD Chief Darryl Perry and the commissioners recognized Lt. Richard Rosa, commander of the Waimea District, for his commitment to traffic safety in the Patrol Service Bureau, which is tasked with increasing traffic enforcement for road safety during the holiday season.
The Waimea District officers collectively issued a total of 1,064 citations, 654 of which were moving violations, a county news release states.
Lt. Rosa personally issued a total of 35 citations, 25 of which were moving violations.
“Since receiving command of this district in 2010, there has been a drastic improvement in enforcement efforts, community participation and arrests,” Perry said in the release. “The Waimea district is doing an outstanding job in all facets of law enforcement through Lt. Rosa’s leadership and guidance.”
Perry awarded the Police Drug Enforcement Star Medal to Abalos and Nesbitt. It is the department’s highest award for service in the fight against drugs on Kaua‘i, the release states, and is awarded for distinguished service above and beyond the normal demands of duty.
Abalos received the honor for his work with the Patrol Services Bureau. Since joining the Waimea District in 2010, Abalos he initiated a total of 11 search warrants. Each warrant resulted in the seizure of drugs or drug paraphernalia, six indictments and 87 arrests.
Nesbitt was awarded the Star Medal for his work in the Waimea District. Since 2007, he initiated a total of 17 search warrants. Of those 17 warrants, 10 resulted in the seizure of drugs or drug paraphernalia. This led to nine indictments and 66 arrests.
“Officer Anthony Abalos and officer Colin Nesbitt have earned the Police Drug Enforcement Star Medal for their outstanding efforts in drug-related cases and arrests,” Perry said. “Their commitment to proactive enforcement and investigations are helping to suppress drug-related activity on Kaua‘i.”
