Christmas is all about giving and blessing others with happiness, said Michaelle Jae Cruz, president of the Kapa‘a High School National Honor Society.
The organization took part in the Angel Tree Project for the fourth year through the Salvation Army.
“Participating in the Angel Tree Project allows me to show someone they deserve to be joyous on that day,” said Vanessa Ortal, a Kapa‘a senior and member of the NHS.
Under the direction of advisers Erin Millard and Fawn Perry, the NHS service project involved students donating a gift to a child or an elderly person in need, the request appearing on an angel to be selected by the club member.
“This service project is not just within our National Honor Society,” Jae Cruz said. “We have also asked and observed participation from several of our school clubs, student council members and teachers on our campus.”
Jae Cruz said the amount of angels has increased over the past four years. This year, the NHS sponsored more than 100 children and older people.
“I am happy to be doing this for someone on behalf of our club,” said Kellee Kikumoto, a Kapa‘a junior who said it is probably her favorite project. “It feels good to give, have them smile and be happy. I want to do this throughout the year, not just for the holidays. My tree is filled with little angels — the best Christmas yet!”
