KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a High School Junior Varsity girls used a 23-5 halftime lead to burry the Kaua‘i JV team, finishing with a 38-16 win, Tuesday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
The JV Red Raiders ended up with 11 points in the second half to Kapa‘a’s 15 marks.
Syanne Almarza topped the Warriors in its win, despite not being in the first quarter 12-0 run over Kaua‘i. Almarza launched a pair of three-balls en route to her game-total 10 points.
Grace Peralta, the perky guard for Kaua‘i’s JV, came up with six of her game-total eight points, including a 3-for-5 showing at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to lead the Red Raiders.
Waimea’s Caitlyn Owen scored all eight of her points in the final period, leading the Menehune on 18-17 run over Island School that helped the Waimea girls finish with a 49-47 win over the Voyagers at the Island School gym.
Cheryl Claypoole, coach of the Island School team, described the event as a barn-burner.
“Waimea won, 49-47, but it was back and forth the entire game,” Claypoole said in an email.
Lauren Claypoole, the Island School center, finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, beaten out by sister Joy Claypoole who finished with 16 points and five rebounds, one of her three-balls coming at the buzzer.
Freshman Autumn Warnock finished with 15 points and five boards to round out the leaders, Kalena Wong, Serena Wong and Kelly Culliney each pairing in the effort.
Vakeesha Lagazo and Mariyah Oliver topped the Waimea win with 12 points apiece, Oliver getting a pair along with Kaelyn Aquino-Kamakele and Paige Connelly launching treys in the opening quarter when Island School took the lead, 9-8 behind Lauren Claypoole’s six-point contribution.
Lagazo and Oliver combined for seven points in the second quarter when Waimea edged Island School, 12-10, the difference giving the Menehune a 20-19 edge at the intermission.
Following an 11-11 third quarter, Owen came alive with her game-decider eight marks in the final quarter when the Menehune nipped the Voyagers, 18-17, Warnock and Joy Claypoole combining for 16 points.
Following Lagazo, Oliver and Owen, Waimea got five points from Connelly and Jessica Soriano, three from Aquino-Kamakele, and pairs from Ulu Matagiese who bucketed her pair in the third frame, and Shayna Alop who was two-for-two at the free throw line in the final frame.
“Everyone got their money’s worth at this one,” Cheryl Claypoole said.
