LIHU‘E — The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are teaming up again this year and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size.
The names have been changed to protect their privacy.
Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Checks made payable to Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766.
For more information, call Yoshiko “Dimples” Kano, chair of The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund Committee, at 822-9882.
Roger and Sam could use some clothing, household goods
Both Roger and Sam have autism and require constant supervision. Their father works full time as a captain for zodiac tours on the North Shore to support the family. During winter months, the ocean is rough and their father is usually laid off of work for about four months (November through March) until the boats can resume their tour operations to the Na Pali Coast again. Their mother stays home to care for them. During these months, the family lives on a strict budget as they have a limited income. The children could use almost anything, from clothing and household goods to food items. Anything is helpful during this time of the year. (Case # ZF-11)
Food and clothing for Henry and John
Henry is a young man with multiple diagnoses, including mental retardation, autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. He recently moved to Kaua‘i from Maui to live here with his grandfather, John. The grandfather now cares for Henry full time, and Henry has been very happy with his move. John is employed as a caretaker for a property on the North Shore in exchange for living on the property, but he receives a minimal amount of money.
Thus, John and Henry could use some extra items for the holiday season. They could use both food and clothing. In addition, Henry has become very enthusiastic about gardening. It helps him to feel better when emotional problems arise. Henry dreams of starting his own business one day making pesto from the basil he grows. He could use some gardening supplies and equipment.
