Ron Peeren, tournament director for the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association, wrapped up his 20-year career with the hosting of the annual HoHoHo Christmas Tournament last weekend at the Puakea Golf Course.
Peeren, who has been a volunteer with the KJGA for two decades, said the tournament marks the end of the KJGA calendar year with Junior Golfers paying a three-player team scramble for nine holes.
Each team was led by and older Junior, an 11-12 division Junior and a 10 and Under Junior.
Jamie Amimoto captained the winning team of Kainalu Gandia and Justice Chatfield who finished with a blistering 5-under par 31.
The players were fielded from the 14-18 division.
Peeren said the teams tying for second and third was finished with 2-under par 32 and the fourth and fifth place teams tied with a 1-under par 35.
The KJGA was founded in the 1960s by Chica Ishii, Mitchell Ota, Toyo Shirai and Tom Tomimoto. The trio shared not only a love of the game of golf, but also a desire to introduce youngsters to the sport and help them develop golf skills.
KJGA’s objective is to provide an environment where its Junior members can enjoy the game of golf while progressing at his, or her own rate while promoting and preserving the traditions and integrity of the game.
Its commitment to this objective continues to build its reputation as being one of the best in preparing Junior Golfers for the future.
The success of the KJGA is due to the support from dedicated parents, businesses, golf professionals and numerous others throughout the island and state.
Membership in the KJGA is open to male and female Junior Golfers ages 7 through 18 who demonstrates a basic understanding of the game of golf.
The KJGA annual membership is from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. An exception is made that KJGA membership is terminated on the Junior’s 19th birthday, or on the first day of class when the Junior enters college, whichever occurs first.
