KALAHEO — The Elsie Wilcox Elementary School turned in more than a ton of food last week.
Kelvin Moniz, the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank Director of Food Resources, said that was just one of several schools who turned in food from food drives over the past two weeks.
Seven schools called on KIFB drivers to pick up collections which are part of the KIFB Holiday Food and Fund Drive which has a goal of 40,000 pounds of food and $40,000.
Joining Wilcox School, Kalaheo School turned in 753 pounds of food which Moniz picked up, Thursday.
“We had the drivers out at Hanalei Elementary School, Wednesday,” Moniz said. “They came in with 100 pounds of food.”
Kaua‘i High School turned in 101 pounds, the Koloa Elementary School turned in 450 pounds, the Kamehameha Preschool in Anahola tallied 96 pounds and Ke Kula O’ Ni‘ihau turned in 53 pounds, Moniz said.
These contributions from the schools were joined by the Wilcox Hospital Foundation who contributed 920 pounds of food as well a monetary contribution and the East Kaua‘i Lions Club who turned in 250 pounds of food.
“All of this puts the Holiday Food and Fund Drive at 24,985 pounds of food and $20,000,” Moniz said. “We’re still short of the goal, but KIFB will continue the drive until Dec. 31. We want to thank all of the people for their continued support of the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank.”
He said people are still able to drop off contributions of non-perishable food at any of the fire stations on the island, or at the KIFB warehouse in Nawiliwili.
The Holiday Food and Fund Drive is sponsored by Napa Auto Parts (PS&D), First Hawaiian Bank, the Grove Farm Co., A&B Foundation, the Kaua‘i Community Federal Credit Union, all of the radio stations on Kaua‘i, the Garden Island newspaper, the County of Kaua‘i Fire Department and Ho‘ike Community Television.
