NAWILIWILI — Maile Bryan of Martin A. Bryan, Inc. took the reins of the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i during the CAK 54th Annual Meeting and Installation, Dec. 1 at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Judge Laurel Loo installed Bryan and the other officers of CAK including Jerry Nishek of Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping as first vice president and Travis Horka of Custom Landscaping and Maintenance as second vice president, states a CAK release.
Jesse Akagi of The Gas Co. serves as the CAK secretary and Dirk Apao of Finance Factors will control the purse strings as CAK treasurer.
Tom Arnott of Jas. W. Glover, Bryan Davidson of Earthworks Pacific, Fred Pascual of Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative, Susan Chandler of RSI/Rosa’s Supply, David Hinazumi of the Grove Farm Co., Lanell Miyamoto of Kalei’s Steelworks, Trinette Kaui of Alexander & Baldwin Properties, Laura Cushnie of Cushnie Construction, Keith Suga of Goodfellow Bros. and Matt Taba, former president of CAK, of Taba Realty and Development will serve as the 2012 CAK directors.
Five member firms were recognized for their respective contributions to the CAK, the construction industry and the community, the recipients getting awards named after the memories of some of the CAK charter members, or long-standing members.
Sandi Kato-Klutke of the Aston Islander on the Beach was presented the Tetsuro “Rosy” Maeda Member of the Year award.
Briant Construction was presented the Kenneth Shioi General Contractor of the Year award by Conrad Murashige, president of Shioi Construction and Kalei Gardner and Lanell Miyamoto of Kalei’s Steeworks accepted the 2011 Hideo Tanaka Sub-Contractor of the Year award.
Custom Landscaping and Maintenance was presented the President’s award and the Robert Rask Spirit of CAK award was accepted by David Bissell, CEO of KIUC, who also presented the evening’s keynote presentation.
One of the traditions established by the CAK is the contribution of canned goods during its membership meetings. The contributed food is in turn awarded to the Salvation Army, Hanapepe Corps for its soup kitchen and food pantry program.
During the course of 2011, more than a thousand pounds of food was contributed through this program.
CAK was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kaua‘i. It is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders.
