PUHI — Lauren Claypoole finished with a game-high 18 points, but the effort came up six points short against Kapa‘a, Wednesday night at the Island School gym.
The Warrior ladies prevailed, 37-31, surviving an intensive comeback from the Voyager wahine who had rescheduled the game from its original Tuesday night.
Kekai Gonsalves and Leilyn Makanani set the pace for Kapa‘a, both players finishing with a balanced 10 points each.
Ka‘anoi Marshall added five and Lucyancy Harper added a pair in the win.
Lauren set the pace for the Voyagers, notching eight of her game-total 18 points in the final quarter when Island School outscored Kapa‘a 15-6 in a comeback attempt from a deficit which, at one point in the game, was at 15 points.
“We’re still in it,” Lauren, the Island School’s center, barked to her four posts in the final three minutes when the Voyagers had trimmed the margin to 10 points.
Lauren was held scoreless for the first five minutes and went on to score five of the Voyagers’ seven first-half points, the other pair coming from Lauren’s sister Joy, a cross country standout, who netted her bucket in the second quarter.
Joy, instrumental in generating several much-needed late game turnovers, finished with eight points followed by guard Autumn Warnock notching all of her game-total five points in the second half from the free throw line.
Island School next hosts Kaua‘i High School in a single game, Friday starting at 7 p.m. while the Warriors host the Menehune with the Junior Varsity starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity game tipping off about 20 minutes following the JV match.
