NAWILIWILI — Woodie and Karen Cole and their merry band of carolers aboard Coyote broke through the threatening weather to take top honors at the annual Nawiliwili Yacht Club Lighted Boat Parade, Sunday at Nawiliwili Harbor.
The weather, enhanced by National Weather Service advisories and warnings, did not deter the hardy souls of three boats, the winning Coyote breaking through the biting wind with rounds of Christmas carols enhanced by a Santa figure lit by a hand-held spotlight.
For its effort, the spectators, all bundled against the cold winds and threatening mist, voted to award the crew top honors and a cash award of $75.
Reel Fun, piloted by Wendell Merritt and his crew of Lesha, Kawai and Tommy, overcame a tempermental motor and blinking lights to capture runner-up honors and $50 with Dick Olsen, newly elected treasurer of the NYC, and his crew, including Carol Marsh, aboard Speedy getting the $25 cash award.
The parade served as a prelude to the annual Christmas bash catered by The Feral Pig and Scott Kessinger at the Harbor Mall with John Gillan and friend doing the honors with live tunes for about 60 NYC members and guests.
Jim Saylor was installed as Commodore during the Change of Watch Ceremony which is part of the annual holiday gathering.
Ron Wagner is the Vice Commodore and Kessinger of The Feral Pig fills the Rear Commodore position. Carl Andersson is the Fleet Captain, Ken Dorland is the Port Captain, Sea Peterson is the Secretary and Olsen is the Treasurer.
Mary Kopitzke and Jiah Yim were installed as Directors.
The NYC 2012 racing season opens with the Opening Day Race on Feb. 11, 2012 with details to come.
