LIHU‘E —The condition of a couple seriously injured in a car-moped accident remains unknown nearly a week after it occurred.
Kaua‘i Police Department Dispatch received a call at 7:14 p.m. on Dec. 4 about a traffic collision involving a moped just north of mile marker 12 on Kuhio Highway.
According to police, the female driver of the moped was traveling southbound on Kuhio Highway with a male passenger, age 50. The blue and white moped was rear-ended by an automobile driven by a 73-year-old male, forcing the moped to collide with another vehicle heading in the opposite direction driven by a 56-year-old female.
Jeane Michioka was the driver of the northbound van that the moped struck after being hit from behind. She reported that the car and the moped were going full speed in the collision and that the female rider wound up in the windshield of the car that struck them.
The male passenger, she added, hung on to the moped as it traveled across the highway towards her van. There was no shoulder and only a guard rail.
As Michioka tried to slow down the moped hit the van in the front wheel and fender. The moped then bounced back onto the road.
The woman who struck the windshield could reportedly talk, Michioka added. The concern turned to someone directing traffic away from the second victim who seemed to be hurt much worse.
Other drivers stopped and began to help move traffic until the police arrived. Others tended to the victims.
The male rider was reportedly seriously hurt with a head injury and seemed to have stopped breathing at one point, according to Michioka. A witness said his name is Chris Nicks, a visitor from Alaska.
KPD closed the highway for at least an hour. The driver and the passenger were transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
