LIHU‘E — From 1 to 5 p.m., Friday, the Pacific Eye Center will host its 15th Eye Care Day event at its offices adjacent to Taco Bell at Kukui Grove Center.
People who are in need of eye care services but are without insurance or financial means are able to enjoy the contribution of Ophthalmologist Dr. Larry Sherrer and the staff of Pacific Eye Center to the community.
Appointments will not be taken and service is done on a first come, first served basis during the four-hour period.
“This is a way of giving back to the community in which Dr. Sherrer and his staff live and work,” said Nette Manaday, Pacific Eye Center office administrator. “Dr. Sherrer and his staff donate their time and resources so people without insurance or financial means can receive a full eye examination as well as a pair of glasses at absolutely no cost to them.
The program started as a partnership with Great Smiles Dental when Dr. Greg Naganuma wanted to make sure people who were in need could better enjoy the holidays.
Joining with the Pacific Eye Center, Dr. Naganuma offered free dental services while Dr. Sherrer, in his offices located adjacent to the dental office, worked on offering free eye services. Additionally, other community partners offered free flu shots and Dr. Naganuma opened his offices to The Salvation Army, hosting a Red Kettle for those who wanted to contribute something for the services.
This practice continued until today despite Pacific Eye Center moving to its current location at 4418 Kukui Grove Street.
Dr. Naganuma has since retired from the dental practice and Pacific Eye Center is the only organization continuing this practice of community sharing.
