LIHU‘E — The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are teaming up again this year and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size.
The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks made payable to Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766. For more information, call Yoshiko “Dimples” Kano, chair of The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund Committee, at 822-9882.
New clothes would brighten Ellie’s day
Ellie is a single lady in her early 60s whose life has not turned out as she expected. Until the past few years Ellie was full of energy, fiercely independent and could take whatever life handed her with grace. That changed when Ellie was diagnosed with a debilitating disease that devastates the person but is invisible to others. No longer able to work, this highly educated, highly motivated lady has been forced to depend on the state welfare system for support. Ellie could really use some new clothes to brighten her spirits. Linens would brighten Sue’s Christmas
Sue is a single lady in her late 70s, who, despite some developmental challenges has been able to care for herself all these years. Sue held down a job until retirement age and lives independently. Due to some health conditions that are advancing wit age, Sue now needs some assistance with managing the upkeep of her home, which takes any extra monies she has from her very small Social Security.
Some new linens and towels would help to make this a brighter Christmas for Sue. Case # ZB-6
Kindness would be welcomed
Mrs. Gail Lima has been the caregiver for her spouse, Mr. Harold Lima who has dementia. Despite her health conditions, Mrs. Lima has cared for her husband for over a year and was recently diagnosed with a heart problem. Their fixed income is their Social Security benefits only. After paying for hospital bills, medication prescriptions, utilities, groceries and mortgage, they struggle to purchase a few personal necessities. Your kindness would be most welcomed this holiday season. Case # ZB-7
Crooks could use some support
Mr. Mike Crooks live in a plantation home. Mr. Crooks doesn’t drive and they depend on their daughter to take them to their doctor appointments. Mr. and Mrs. Crooks suffer from numerous health conditions. Their only income is social security benefits and it just puts them a few dollars above poverty level, making them ineligible for Sate assistance.
After paying for their utilities, groceries, hospital bills and prescription medication, they don’t have much left to buy their personal articles.
Any support for Mr. and Mrs. Crooks during the holiday season would be greatly appreciated. Case # ZB-8
