LIHU‘E — The Hawai‘i Children’s Theater left food out for three of the agencies responsible for getting food to Kaua‘i’s hungry people, Monday.
Michelle Panoke of the Hawai‘i Food Bank’s Kaua‘i branch, said she received a voicemail requesting them to pick up food supplies.
HCT, currently in its production of “Willy Wonka, The Musical,” offered a special presentation, Sunday, when patrons were requested to contribute toward helping feed Kaua‘i’s hungry.
This resulted in a collection which was distributed to the Hawai‘i Food Bank’s Kaua‘i branch, the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank and The Salvation Army.
“The Salvation Army getting some of the food is good,” said Kelvin Moniz, the KIFB food operations manager. “They feed a lot of people and can always use food.”
Wes Perreira of the HFBK said they received an application from The Salvation Army, which was approved, and worked to help them with the 49th Annual Community Thanksgiving Luncheon on Wednesday in Lihu‘e and Hanapepe.
“We have the materials they need to do the volume work they do,” Perreira said.
He said the HCT contribution comes on the heels of the Safeway and Kraft Foods drive Saturday, which netted more than 1,000 pounds of food.
That drive continues through Dec. 24 at the Safeway store in the Kaua‘i Shopping Village.
Customers pay $10 during checkout and a special pre-packaged assortment of eight items is placed in a special container.
“We just came from doing a pick up at the store,” Perreira said before arriving at the convention hall in Lihu‘e to pick up the HCT contribution.
