NAWILIWILI — County officials on Thursday released the identity of a 90-year-old man found Nov. 4 unresponsive in shallow waters near Nawiliwili Yacht Club.
Kaua‘i Police Department identified the victim as Roy Shiroma, of Lihu‘e. Autopsy results are pending and KPD added that no foul play is suspected.
A group of anglers on Nov. 4 discovered the body and called police around 11:05 p.m. They were catching bait, ‘opae (freshwater shrimp) near the base of a floating wooden dock used by kayak companies at the mouth of Niumalu Stream.
Aaron Howard discovered Shiroma’s body under 55-gallon drums attached to the dock, according to one of the anglers, Joseph Manini, Jr.
Howard was scooping for shrimp, Manini said, and yelled for others after seeing a foot sticking out from under the barrels.
Manini said Joseph Wakin and Kaipo Hanohano pulled the man’s body out from the water. He and others attempted CPR and called 911. Police officers continued CPR until medics arrived.
Efforts to revive Shiroma were unsuccessful, according to KPD. He was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
Manini said people in the area recognized the victim as a man who lived at the Lihu‘e town houses and took brief evening walks in the area. He said he assumed there was foul play because the man’s car was there with its glove box open and he had no wallet.
