HONOLULU — A longtime surfer has invented an electric device he says will repel sharks in the water. But a marine biologist says shocking a shark might shock the surfer, too.
Honolulu surfer Wilson Vinano, Jr. came up with the Electronic Shark Defense System along with Collin Kobayashi, an engineer and president of 3D Innovations.
The device, which costs $299 without a leash — and $335 with a leash — sends out “electric pulses that interfere with the gel in a shark’s nose,” according to a press release.
