When a restaurant is too highly praised, I must admit, I find myself skeptical about what it has to offer. I mean, nothing can be that good.
After hearing rave reviews recently of Tiano’s Island Cuisine — especially gushing reviews over its breakfast menu — I knew I couldn’t wait another Sunday to give this Lihu‘e eatery a try.
A year since opening its doors, Tiano’s Island Cuisine has pulled together a menu that is sure to satisfy all appetites, whether you are in the mood for local dishes, American classics or fresh fish.
The restaurant reminds me of a diner, filled with large booths and tables. The servers at Tiano’s are a plus, who are familiar with the nuances of the menu.
Pricing begins at $8.99 and tops off at $49.99 (that’s for a steak filet and lobster combination). The average price tag of an entree hovers around $15.99, and the portions are hearty.
The vegetable omelet at $10.99 is light and fluffy, which includes fresh mushrooms, chopped onions, bell peppers, tomato and green onions. Ask for a dollop of salsa if you prefer a Southwest-inspired breakfast.
The deluxe french toast ($10.99) is a great deal at the price. The dish of thick, fluffy slices of bread soaked in beaten eggs, milk and spices is big enough for two to share.
A plate of savory kalua pork ($14.99) is also a favorite. The slow-cooked pork roast and mouthwatering smokey taste make this Hawaiian dish a must.
Breakfast and local offerings aside, Chef Joel Navasca’s prime rib, steaks and seafood dishes offer an innovative blend of Hawaiian, Italian and Asian cuisine, without going over the top. A varied menu will appeal to a variety of diners.
The Lihu‘e restaurant’s claim to fame is being one of the few places to eat on a Sunday, or for a late night bite for that matter.
When it comes to variety, Tiano’s has it covered. Where else can one go and order freshly made French toast, glazed Kalbi short ribs and an 8-ounce lobster any time of day?
Each dish was made with quality ingredients, and served with an artful presentation. The portions are a steal for the price, and its breakfast menu is what makes this eatery a real find.
The restaurant also offers special events, banquets, karaoke and catering.
On Thanksgiving, Tiano’s will be open for a lunch and dinner buffet, which includes Turkey and all the trimmings for $28.95 per person and $14.95 for ages four to 11 (children three and under eat for free). Reservations are recommended.
Tiano’s is located at 4479 Rice St. in Lihu‘e, in the Haleko Village complex. The restaurant is open from 7 a.m to midnight daily. To browse Tiano’s menu, download a coupon or for more information visit www.tianosrestaurant.com or call 245-6909.
Best Bet: The Local Dee-Lites menu. Whether it’s a mouth watering plate of savory kalua pig ($14.99), a heaping plate of loco moco ($11.99) or a tender Pulehu Steak ($12.99), this writer loves the flavors of just about everything from this menu.
Skip: Grandma’s Famous Veggie Lumpia ($7.99). An unimpressive dish of fried and crispy spring rolls lacked flavor and the dipping sauce was disappointing.
Watching What You Eat? Start your day off with the Fresh Catch and Eggs ($13.99). The chef broils a fresh fish with miso sauce, served with two eggs. This hardy meal is big enough to split with a friend.
